Creating Your Birth Circle: A Sacred Space for Love, Kindness, and Balance
When it comes to preparing for birth, I always encourage my clients to surround themselves with affirmations, letters from loved ones, kind words, and faces that radiate positivity. These are the sources of support—the team you bring into birth with you. They're the ones ready to fill the room with love, good energy, and a sense of calm.
But what happens when it feels like it's too much?

What if all that well-intentioned support starts to feel suffocating?
What if, instead of being enveloped in love, you're spending your energy managing everyone else's anxiety, soothing their concerns, and making sure they're comfortable in your space?
Sometimes, the people who are meant to help can become overwhelming. They move in to “assist,” but instead of feeling supported, you’re left trying to make them feel at ease—preparing meals, tending to their needs, offering minute-by-minute updates. You might start wishing that these "helpers" would step back and give you space to breathe, to let your body expand and the birth process unfold naturally.
I recently experienced a birth like this, and it really got me thinking about the delicate balance between having a supportive team and maintaining your own personal space during this sacred time.
Many of my clients are from international backgrounds, and it’s common for parents from both sides of the family to be present. They come full of excitement, ready to witness and relive their own birth stories through their daughter or daughter-in-law. They believe they’ll have the same experience they did decades ago—perhaps in a different country, hospital, and with completely different birth methods.
So how do we create that perfect balance—where love, kindness, and support are present without feeling overwhelmed? How do we maintain that sacred birth bubble, that space that protects our peace, our energy, and allows birth to unfold in its own time?

The Importance of Your Birth Circle
Your birth circle is where you and your baby can find refuge. It’s a space where you are surrounded by only the energy that you choose to welcome. This circle can be filled with those who love and support you, but it must also be protected.
Think about your family—both past and present—and who you truly want in this sacred space with you. The members of your family who are invited into this circle will have a direct impact on the type of birth experience you have.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
- Who in my family do I want to invite into this circle?
- Do I want my family members there physically, emotionally, or spiritually?
- What parts of my family history do I want to bring into my birth space?
- Do I want them with me in the last few weeks of pregnancy, during labor, at birth, or in the days following?
This is where we can also explore how to release any birth baggage, memories of past experiences that might be holding us back from fully embracing this moment. Letting go of these negative energies is an essential part of creating a birth experience that feels empowering and transformative.
Creating Your Sacred Circle

Let’s begin by imagining how we can connect to our birth circle and release any baggage that may be weighing us down.
(The baggage we carry.)

1. Stand tall and envision your parents standing behind you—your mother on your left and your father on your right. You can place chairs or circles of felt on the floor to represent them, or even invite real people to embody these roles.
2. Acknowledge each parent, one at a time. Turn toward your father and then to your mother. Look them in the eye, or gently touch their hand. Allow yourself to feel the emotions that rise—whether it’s joy, sorrow, forgiveness, or peace. This is the moment to release any unresolved feelings from your past.

(Loving mother and daughter. Mother traveled across the world for birth.)
3. Behind your parents stand your grandparents, then their parents, and so on, all the way back through your ancestors.

Picture everyone present—your entire family tree—surrounding you in love and support. This is where you can release negative energy and embrace the positive energy flowing through your lineage.
4. In this space, you can let go of the unwanted baggage. Breathe deeply and imagine filling your soul with affirmations of joy, love, and strength. Picture yourself standing at the center of your universe, radiating peace, beauty, and inner power.

This process allows you to create a powerful connection with your ancestors and your birth circle, gaining strength from them as you prepare for your own birth experience. It’s a way to honor your family history while also carving out space for your own unique journey.
Embracing Your Strengths
As Maya Angelou beautifully wrote in her poem “Still I Rise”—we carry within us the strength of all those who came before us. We are the sum of our ancestors’ love, wisdom, and resilience. And just as they rose, so too will you.

Your birth circle is where you find that strength, where you stand as the center of your universe. It is a place of refuge, where you are surrounded only by the energy that supports and uplifts you. This is where you hold space for your birth to unfold in its own time, without unnecessary interruptions or overwhelming expectations.
Conclusion

Creating a birth circle is about finding that perfect balance of support, love, and space. It’s about honoring your ancestors while also protecting your energy and creating a sacred space that allows for your birth to unfold naturally. Remember, you are at the center of your universe, and this sacred circle is a reflection of that. Fill it with the energy and love that empower you, and let go of anything that no longer serves you.

This is your birth. It is sacred. And it is yours to create.
Wishing you the best,
Michal
